• Always fun to see my engineering being used :-)

Several years ago, I saw a wild turtle/tortoise walking around the edge of my pond. I'm no expert, but I didn't see flippers and it definitely wasn't the Eastern box turtle that I see all the time. But I thought he was trying to take a sip of water.

Then he fell in, hard! Big splash with a surprised look on his face!

Now, the edges of my pond are straight up and down, so NO way for him to get out. I rushed over, but the water was too dark to see him and the sludge in the bottom was too thick. I tried for awhile with a net but couldn't find him, so my last ditch effort was to take a nearby deck board and wedge it in there, hoping maybe he could use it as a ladder and get out.

I never knew if he found the board or got out, but I haven't seen an empty shell or anything so I hope so. And the board has been there ever since, just in case.

Today, I finally had vindication when I saw this turtle making his way out of the pond :-D

  • Potato?

Maybe it's too early to tell, but this little plant sprouted in my garden (along with a few other similar looking ones) and I'm not sure if it's a potato growing out of old compost or maybe some other type of wild nightshade? Seek/iNaturalist seems to think it's a potato!

  • Flies like IPA!

Taking my plants out for dinner! I know I have to repot them, but I haven't had a chance. I was sitting outside and couldn't keep the flies off my beer, so I went inside to bring the plants out for a snack. They currently live in my bathroom window. I've had the fly traps on the left for two years now and would bring them out every so often during the summer. The plants on the right are newer ones I purchased this year. Just thought I would share.

On a separate note. I put the fly taps on the left in my garage refrigerator for dormancy from mid- November until the end of March. The entire time they were in my refrigerator they stayed big and beautiful with a deep red center. They didn't die back until I pulled them back out ( I even checked to make the light turned off when the door closed). Is that normal? I thought they would die back while in the refrigerator.

  • Why is my grass yellowing? Utah

    Northern Utah

Yard was very green and doing well after spring overseeding and fertilizing. This one section seems to be drying up. It is the most exposed to direct sun and does not get shade until about 7 pm, the rest of the lawn has periodic shade throughout the day. It has been pretty hot here in Utah, between 85-95 degrees for the past few weeks. No rain. It is a fescue lawn, watered every day for 15-20 minutes per section during hot days, if temp is below 80 I will skip watering. Could this be fungus? Disease? Overwatering? Not enough?

Thanks for any and all advice.

  • Friend or foe on my pepper plant?

    Hi,

I have a raised bed on my balcony (1. Floor). Today I found 2 of these fluffy white pests?

What are these and are they bad?

If they are bests: how to get rid of them?
My plant produces about 3 to 4 peppers at the moment.

    Thank you for your advice.
