• Tillandsia novakii with one of our growers

A caulescent species with a stem to over two feet long with very stiff, thick, spreading, almost succulent, red leaves. The inflorescence consists of a rose-red scape with 3 to 6 narrow, silvery branches, the whole extending over a foot. Native to Veracruz, Mexico where it grows as an epiphyte in small trees under semi-arid conditions. Easy to cultivate.

  • What did I do to my grass?

Earlier in the spring, I put down crabgrass preventer that I believe had fertilizer in it (from Home Depot). Then before leaving for a one week vacation, I put down a granular weed and feed, also from Home Depot. It was supposed to rain later that day but I’m not sure it really panned out. Came back from vacation to all these brown streaky areas of dead grass. Worse in some areas than others. Could it be that it didn’t get watered in? Or would there be a different explanation?

  • Weed/Grass identification

Zone 10b. This weed/grass popped up in my marathon (fescue) in one spot. It grows much faster and is a bit more yellow than the rest of my lawn.

Hit it once with sedgehammer but didn’t seem to do much.

  • What kind of rubber plant is this? Bought it unlabeled at a grocery store.

Bought this yesterday. Never had a rubber plant before and I couldn’t resist these colors. I let it acclimate the rest of the day and overnight. I was going to let it acclimate longer but I didn’t like the soil it was in (condensed, soppy wet). I repotted it into chunky soil with potting soil, pumice, perlite, bark, some peat moss and some earth worm castings.

I did research that it is toxic to pets, so it is confined to my room, away from the dogs. And to not touch any part of it with bare hands, or at least to wash your hands right after.

Since it was an impulse buy I need to jockey around some other plants to figure out where to put it long term. It is currently about 10 feet away from my west windowsill, in the direct path of the sunbeams, but it is high on my desk shelf so the sun pathway only briefly hits it in the evening.

  • Lucky Tiger tomatoes

These are the coolest looking maters I’ve grown yet. San Marzano look cool too, when they ‘zipper’. Anyway, thanks for looking!

  • Not sure what to do with this backyard

Our backyard has looked like this since we moved in years ago. The concrete is heavily sloped and has many cracks. The side is elevated and flat. I think there is potential here. There’s a lot of space we’re just not sure what we should do. Thanks for the advice.
