• Ideas for small planting areas

Just finishing this five year project (not seen are the 100’ of 4’ retaining walls the fences sit on, and several dry wells for the whole home’s stormwater, etc).

The turf is because it’s great for the playground with playpad safety stuff underneath. The grass is so we have some sort of useable non-dirt surface to put trampoline on and romp around. I want a little planting strip between the two because it is way less awkward than butting them up, and plants are the bees’ knees. I am kind of wanting a fruit tree to break up how plain and sparse it will be. I’d plant it just past the slide towards the fence, since we use the other side’s space to play catch and such. We are inner-city and our yards are very small.

What else to make that planting strip functional and nice? I’m in Seattle. That strip should have lower plants or shrubs to keep the space more usable for playing and such, but should be durable enough to survive some kid shenanigans. I’ll put Corten steel edging on either side to define it and keep the grade a touch lower to allow easy passing through and water to pool a tiny bit where the plantings are.

    — I’m considering a small planting strip along length of fence as well, but it’s pretty shady along there.

If you’re wondering about the different grass area at the end, that is VERY shady and it’s a type that grows with little sun. It also had a parking grid underneath the grass because it is a convertible space (see two gates) that can be closed off to shorten the yard and give our downstairs tenants parking. It becomes bonus yard when no tenant parking there, and the grass is still filling out.

  • Need help with this cactus

Got this moon cactus around 5 years ago. There were 2 in the pot both with pink bulbs on top. Bulbs died so I cut it off but now this monstrosity is growing. Help! I’m assuming the weight will be too much soon and it will break but I don’t know how to go about restructuring it. It gets water once a week and is in the sun all day so it grows like a weed. Not sure if I can do something with the roots shooting out of it.

  • I'm new to this bonsai thing to be honest. I got a ficus ginseng bonsai (i know it's a hated type) a little over a month ago. It was dropping it's leaves like crazy at first, but I can see little buds growing lately.

This is my starter setup, don't roast me please, haha.

  • can i bake with these berries i found in my yard?

Some of these tiny blackberries started dropping from a tree in my backyard a few days ago so i set a recycling bin out to see if i could collect some. I know nothing about gardening or cooking with berries that i haven't bought from the store. the tree isn't sprayed with anything to keep the bugs off. i managed to collect this much from the bin after a couple days and i got some that landed on one of my wicker chairs. there was rain during that time so i had to strain the berries out. after rinsing them , there was still so many of these tiny orangish bugs/worms crawling around on them. i put them in salt water and set that in the freezer for 30 minutes, then rinsed them with a tiny bit of dawn, then continued rinsing for maybe 5 minutes. i don't see any crawling around now. is it safe for me to make a cobbler with them? also should i pick off those tiny branch things?

  • Fifth Anniversary

My wife says I’d really like some daisies for our anniversary. So I go to the one and only flower shop in the region and they don’t have any daisies.

Well lucky for me I haven’t mowed in a week and a half and my yard provided me with wildflowers. Still picking but here’s what I have so far.
