  • New house trash yard recovery plan. Please help

In Michigan. I have a new home with lots of trees. Previous owners didnt rake or mulch for about 2 years from what neighbors said. I just fixed our irrigation system that's on a well so regular watering wont be an issue. Id say its 20-30% grass, 40% clover/broadleaf weeds and the rest dirt patches. I know the plan should be get rid of weeds in the spring and seed in the fall. Is there anything I can do now? Or do I just wait til fall for topsoil and over seeding? Can i seed now if im planningvon leveling all the divots made by the standinf leaves? I really don't mind burning money on seed if it will speed up the recovery process of the yard if some will take. My issue is I don't want to waste the time if its basically useless. Thanks in advance!
Photo is my front lawn my side lot is much bigger and less leveled..

  • Any suggestions - ground cover for steep hill/erosion mat

    Hi there!

Trying to cover up the erosion control mat for a steep hill I have in my yard. I planted trees that will eventually cover the wall (years later) with the privacy hedge - but I’m looking for a quicker solution.

Any suggestions - i considered Boston ivy vines but they also take a long time to grow and cover the space I need!

  • First Successful Veggie Haul

I finally did it. I have been a casual ”cherry tomato” pot grower since 2017, with a mighty harvest of a handful of tomatoes at best. In 2019 I briefly tried to do a proper vegetable garden when I lived in West Texas - and it was spectacularly pulped to death in a hail storm.

Last year I tried my hand at a proper vegetable garden bed while living in Southern Louisiana and failed spectacularly. The tobasco pepper I planted was the only thing that desperately clung to life. Everything else got obliterated by the heat, rain, and blight.

This year my husband and I revamped how we were set up. Deeper garden beds with soil from a soil distributor, and we put up acrylic roofing above the tomatoes to protect against the heavy rains. I also had a supply of personal compost this year (I started to compost last year early 2024).

    It all made the difference.

I have some coworkers that get even crazier harvests than this from only a handful of plants so I know there’s more I can do to optimize but I have traction - so I know I can do even better next year.

Southern Louisiana is definitely a good place to grow veggies but there are learning pains from the Summer heat and humidity that you need local advice for. Gardening overall is a lovely way to make friends.

  • Patio assistance

I will admit i was not diligent/ patient with this project. I am currently contemplating just ripping up the stones and planting clover. Is there another easier way to go about saving this ? Currently there is about inch or so of sand beneath the stones and weed barrier beneath that, and white gravel in between each. If I were to rip it up not sure what i can do with the stones other than sell them. Need advice or guidance on this.
