  • Advice on this spinach?

Is this spinach done for? Any thoughts on the Bibb lettuce growing slower than the rest? And why the butter lettuce isn’t growing so quickly?

Thank you so much for any advice!

  • I'm at my wits end with gnats

I bought a monstera last year and it has been a gnat magnet for whatever reason. Last year I did all that I could to get rid of them to no avail, I basically had to just wait it out for the winter to kill them off. This year I noticed that they're slowly coming back. When I noticed the first few I immediately went into action with everything I did last year - I isolated my monstera, I've watered it with Mosquito Bits, I've set out a vinegar trap, I have a sticky pad by the soil, and I keep my drains plugged whenever I'm not using them. Despite all this, I'm still slowly seeing more and more around. I'm not sure if Mosquito Bits is helping because I watered my monstera with it once a month last year and they still kept multiplying. The vinegar traps use to work great for me, if I had a gnat problem in the past I'd just set one out and that'd do the trick, but these gnats have to be made of something else because none of them are drawn to it. I really don't wanna throw this monstera out, but is it something I should consider at this point? Is there anything else I should try?

  • Extrafloral nectaries and beltian bodies, fun fact request

I'm writing a short article about myrmecophytes (plants with ant symbiosis). I'd love some interesting tidbits about these structures, especially in New England plants.

For those unfamiliar, extrafloral nectaries are structures that secrete nectar *outside* of the flower, in order to attract ants and wasps, which then eat pests on the plant. These are often found at the base of the leaf, but can be almost anywhere.

Some of these relations are really complex. Bullhorn acacia also provide oil and protein packets called beltian bodies, and house their ants in large hollow thorns.

Some gall maker wasps trigger plants to grow extrafloral nectaries to get ants to defend the gall, which houses a wasp larva. (I believe this is at play in my photo, which is even more impressive because the host plant here, an oak, doesnt otherwise produce nectaries)

  • American Wisteria - What would you do?

We inherited this American Wisteria with our home. While it is so beautiful, we aren't a huge fan of where it's planted and worry about the sidewalk and brick wall it's planted next to (garage).

I know wisteria frequently cause issues when planted close to the house, but I am afraid to move this to a spot that give it more "freedom" to take over. What would you do? It's a gorgeous plant, but I have concerns

Is the American Wisteria less prone to causing issues than the other varieties?
