How to manage weeds in a 2nd year wildflower conversion?
In the process of converting an area overgrown with weeds to a native wildflower garden.
This year just a small bed with mostly annuals. I germinated the wildflowers in flats from a mix and grew them into seedlings before planting them out, so it was easy to know which plants were wildflowers and which were weeds. Got about 8 species. They’re currently in the process of dropping seed and dying off until the next growing season.
But if I were to try to let them come back from seed next year, I’m worried about the weeds: there’s still a big, area nearby with weeds (i.e. a seed source).
Next season, if I try to let it come back from seed, I won’t be able to weed most things until they’re big enough for me to be sure what is/isn’t a wildflower. I don’t want to accidentally weed out the wildflowers. But I don’t want the weeds to outcompete the natives and take over either.
How do people manage wildflower gardens in year 2 (and beyond)? Should I even try to let it come back from seed? Or should I just repeat what was done the first year, until I can get a better handle on the rest of the weeds in the area, and there aren’t so many weed seeds in the seed bank?
