Patio drainage / play sand suggestions?

Hi! My very old brick patio is in rough shape. Eventually, we’ll have someone completely redo the patio and walkway. In the meantime, I’m trying to make it feel a little cleaner and more pleasant. I spent some time (ok, a lot of time) this past weekend removing weeds, moss, and muck from the pavers. I think our drainage issues are causing a lot of the muck/moss. Basically water pools in a few places on the patio near the garden and the actual garden area closest to the patio becomes a swamp when it rains or I use the hose (yellow highlighted area in pic is where water pools). I have zero little experience but I’m thinking about digging a trench and putting in a perforated drain pipe with fabric and rocks. I’m wondering if one pipe will solve the problem or if I also need some sort of catch basin or something all around the garden edge to collect water and direct it toward the drain pipe. Would greatly appreciate any advice!

My second question is about filling in the space between the pavers with sand. I’ve worked pretty damn hard to clean these babies but I’m not quite ready to put down polymeric sand. I think I’d rather do that across the whole patio in one go but I’m still de-weeding / de-mucking parts of the patio. In the meantime, I was thinking about filling the parts that are already clean with playground sand (saw someone do that in a video). Is that dumb? I’m worried it could be hard to get the play sand out later and then the polymeric sand won’t work as well. Would appreciate any suggestions on this issue!
