ELI5: Succulent Pup Propagation
Hi, everyone! First time poster in this sub and was hoping for some guidance regarding my succulent plants and their offspring.
I have looked at the wiki and rules before posting to make sure I wasn't breaking any sub rules and to see if I could figure this out without bothering you fine folks. Clearly, the succulent vernacular is above me and here we are.
I received this pot of various succulents in January of 2022. The first of each month I water with succulent feed and have noticed a while ago that babies were happening and my course of action to this revelation was to ignore and hope for the best. That must have worked because now there are a ton of them now and I'm hoping to gift them in little mugs to family and friends in little mugs.
I understand from the wiki that I need to cut the pup off the mother plant, but is there any specifics of where on the stem-looking-thing that that needs to occur? Is there even further specifics like "diagonal" or anything that matters to ensure the mother's safety?
I also understand that I need to let them callous to prevent infection. How exactly does one let them callous while also preventing infection? Like, do I put gauze or anything on it to ensure nothing hurts it? Also, what could cause an infection that I need to be privy to? Using a sterilized knife/shears is understood, but other than that is there anything that can help prevent illness?
I also understand placing the pups in soil and watering may help with root development and growth, but are there any other tips anyone can provide to make a successful propagation more likely?
Also, does the type of soil matter? I found on Amazon succulent "soil" but have top soil readily available now. Is it worth the extra expense or is that a sales gimmick?
So sorry for the long read and I'd like to thank all of you for your assistance in advance!
